The family and support I loved in the Military and how I’ve found that at Bain

Hi, my name is Kelly and I’m a Case Team Leader in our San Francisco office (but currently on a 6 month transfer to Amsterdam!). Prior to Bain, I attended Columbia Business School after transitioning from a career as an Army Engineer Officer.

My decision to depart the military was a tough one and I often wondered if I would ever find a company that had same sense of family and esprit de corps that made me excited to start the day in the Army. When I researched different career paths and companies, it became clear through my interactions that Bain had the potential to become that sort of team. I was attracted to Bain because of the people—they were smart, down to earth, driven, and passionate about making a difference.

Looking back, Bain has only exceeded my expectations. I remember on Day 1 at Bain I was terrified, and thought to myself “when would they figure out I had no clue how to work excel? Do they know I have only made the most basic PowerPoint slides? When would they realize they made a huge mistake?!” What I quickly learned is that Bain encourages you to be open about where you want to develop, and then gives you the resources and tools to improve.

I remember on my first case (two weeks into starting at Bain) I was responsible for building an entire model to analyze drivers of customer behaviors for a major restaurant chain. I ran into my team room (in full panic mode) admitting that I had no idea how to use excel and that there was no way I could complete the analysis in a day let alone a week. Without hesitation one of my teammates, Emerson, jumped up and said “Kelly, I’ve got your back”. He proceeded to sit down with me the rest of the day and taught me how to build the model. While I am long removed from the days of learning how to use excel, my development at Bain has not slowed down. Whether it is on how to run a private equity due diligence, how to transition to the manager role, or the best ways to crack the case in some obscure industry, one thing has remained consistent…the support I’ve received from my fellow team members and Bain employees.

I am humbled by the number of people that have invested in my development and my career. I often say that people at Bain care more about my career than I do. One person in particular that has had a large impact on my time here is my Veterans at Bain mentor. Even across the Atlantic, Ryan serves as a sounding board whenever I have questions on how to run my case, or how to interpret feedback, or whenever I just need to talk to someone who has walked a similar path.

As we approach Veteran’s Day this year, it is hard to believe that this is my 3rd Veteran’s Day at Bain! 3 years later, Bain is still a place where every morning I am excited to go to work with my team to help deliver true results for our clients. On a daily basis I am humbled by the many consulting teams and people I’ve had the chance to work with. At Bain, I’ve found that family and support I loved in the military as well as a great place to work where I can make a true difference.
